Mount Whitney is the tallest peak in the far background. At 14,505 ft (4,421m), it's the highest mountain in the contiguous U.S. The mountain is currently named after Josiah Whitney, California’s first official state geologist. Per Rebecca Solnit's excellent Eadweard Muybridge biography, River of Shadows:

"The early-arriving Yankees named the land they stumbled across as though they had become deities or invented the mountains and rivers themselves... Josiah D. Whitney, who directed the state's geological survey in the 1860s, managed to get the state's tallest mountain named after him and had the name transferred to the present Mount Whitney when it turned out they had measured the peaks wrong the first time." Oooops!

The Paiute Indians call the mountain Too-man-i-goo-yah (the very old man).
