High & Dry is an ongoing project to document the world’s deserts and the people who call them home. Through words and imagery, writer Jack Eidt and photographer Osceola Refetoff explore past, present, and future human interactions with these complex ecosystems, aiming to guide better decision-making for the future. Through a panoply of engagement strategies – journalistic dispatches, documentary video, photo essays, podcasts, and public art exhibitions – this work fosters solutions-focused conversations across diverse audiences, with the goal of inspiring public advocacy and action.
In collaboration with scientists, community stakeholders, Indigenous leaders, business interests, conservationists, artists, and public entities, the project reports on the cultural, historical, economic, and geological forces that define the future of these arid landscapes. High & Dry explorations envision positive change through sustainable energy, environmental conservation, public lands stewarding, Native sovereignty, and the protection of cultural, spiritual, and community resources—all towards fostering a better tomorrow.
